Nanaimo’s waterfront walkway takes you along a path that follows the ocean side. There are fabulous views of Newcastle, Protection Island and the Coastal Mountains. The Newcastle Island ferry and Protection Island ferry pick up and deliver their passengers from the Water Front District. Your stroll along the Boardwalk takes you on a journey past the Nanaimo Yacht Club, waterfront condominiums, marinas, small waterfront cafés, pubs, the float plane terminal, floating restaurants that offer fresh seafood daily,Nanaimo District Museum and the Port Theatre. Near-by Nanaimo Port Authority’s new Cruise Terminal is well on its way to completion.
Pacifica, a modern addition to the Water Front District, provides a swanky, modern lifestyle on Nanaimo’s Harbour, with breathtaking views and the expediency of commuting to and from Downtown Vancouver and the Vancouver Airport via Harbour Air. The Coast Hotel, Port Place Mall, The Great Canadian Casino and Vancouver Island Conference Centre are also located in this area. Cultural festivals in the summer and live entertainment in are often going on at Maffeo-Sutton Park. Swy-a-Lana Lagoon beside Maffeo-Sutton Park features a pedestrian overpass that walks over a man made lagoon and is part of the waterfront walkway. A short trip on a passenger ferry will take you toNewcastle Island Marine Provincial Park or the Dingy Dock Pub on Protection Island. The Snuneymuxw First Nation’s proud heritage is in evidence with various artifacts on display throughout the District.
